Hi guys, New to the forum. Loads of info & knowledge here so hoping someone can help me out.
I've just installed an e420d into my Cap. It's coughing and sputtering (until it floods) but just can't quite get there to fire up. Confirmed there is consistent spark at 8deg BTDC (checked with timing light). Spark plugs and top of the pistons are getting soaked in fuel, so there's definitely fuel. Injector test on WARI is coming up OK. They are 440cc Supra injectors (was already running these fine with previous aftermarket ECU) Running factory dizzy setup with all new bits (CMP sensor, dizzy rotor, cap, coil) Using factory switch TPS wired to digital inputs (for now, will switch to variable TPS in the future). Running DCPR7EIX Iridium plugs.
I even tried disconnecting the injectors and spraying starter fluid / carb cleaner into the throttle body just to see if it start for a second on that, same result, just coughs a lot and sound like it's literally about to kick over.
What am I overlooking??? Appreciate any help, it's driving me nuts!!

Firstly a cappo will not start unless the cranking ignition angle setting is 5 DBTC. They will not start even if it is 1 degree either way. There is a setting to lock this during cranking in Wari.
Once you have sorted that out it should start but you do have quite large injectors and you will probably have to progressively reduce the injector timing as it sounds like they are flooding the engine. Again in Wari go to the fuel map and you can right click (I think) and select all then reduce the injector timing on the fuel map by percentages.
You will also need colder spark plugs if you are going to run increased boost.
Try this and then see how you go from there. |

BTW where did you get the initial fuel map you are using and have you calibrated all of the sensors? |

Thanks Grant, appreciate your input.
I've now set the crank timing to 5 BTDC and got further than before, managed to fire up but only for a second because it was only using starter fluid spray (injectors disconnected). When I try with injectors connected, it floods in no time.
Got the initial fuel map from Mark at Adaptronic, working with him on this but thought I'd ask on here since there are experienced people like yourself here. Haven't calibrated the sensors as yet, the water and air temp sensors don't seem too far out of whack. And as for TPS, there's no calibration of a switch type TPS is there? It's wired to digital input one for closed throttle and digital input 2 for WOT, both are working correctly according to the live ECU data screen. |

You must calibrate your sensors in particular the water and manifold air temp sensors. If you do not this is probably part of the reason you are getting so much flooding.
Adaptronic only have limited numbers of ECU files for cappos in stock format.
We have heaps.
List all modifications from standard on here and I will set a file up for you and either post or send it to you to load into the ECU. |

I did manage to get it started for about a minute today but struggling to do it again.
Thanks heaps, would really appreciate that.
It's running: IHI RHB5 VQ10-8702 turbo 440cc Supra injectors (part number 23250-42010) Aftermarket front mount intercooler Aftermarket fuel pump but unsure which - running 98. Standard ignition setup (using a single channel external igniter from Adaptronic) Manual boost controller (for the time being) 2.25" exhaust.
That's about it, I think.
Previously made 85rwkw on 16psi from memory. |
